Welcome to CPLS, the Sines Port and Logistics Community!
CPLS is an association of public and private stakeholders that are committed to the development of the maritime, logistics and industrial Sines complex.
Established in 1977, the port of Sines has become Portugal’s largest port and Iberia’s third port in cargo handling volumes. Sines handles all types of cargoes, including liquid bulk, dry bulk, LNG, breakbulk, general cargo, ro-ro, and containers, amounting to 43 million tons in 2023, over 50% of Portugal’s throughput. Currently, Sines’ container terminal (Terminal XXI) is ranked among the top 15 in Europe and the top 100 in the World. In addition to its privileged geostrategic location, Sines benefits from water depths up to 28m, 24/7 availability with flat port tariffs, paperless clearance of ships and cargoes and high productivity.
Sines has a substantial impact on the Portuguese economy. It is estimated that the transport and logistics chains that involve Sines comprise 11,500 companies that generate 5.7% of Portugal’s gross value added, employ 116,000 workers and are responsible for 7% of Portugal’s carbon emissions.
Sine’s growth potential is enhanced by a vast area adjacent to the port, covering 4,200 ha, that is dedicated to logistics and industrial activities (ZILS). This area, managed by AICEP Global Parks (aGP), houses several leading industrial companies and is a budding logistics cluster attracting global distribution and light manufacturing centers.
At present, there are several projects at the planning stage or already underway, that will substantially increase the port’s cargo handling capacity and will reinforce Sines’ standing as a world-class smart, green port. Among these, the Nexus initiative led by the Sines Port Authority is noteworthy. It comprehends 35 partners from all sectors of the value chain, that will collaborate to reduce GHG emissions by 55% by 2030. This challenging objective will be accomplished by developing and demonstrating 28 innovative products and services, leveraging digital and energy transition technologies.
Concurrently, ZILS is expanding its leading role in the energy and tech sectors, attracting new investments, such as the production of green hydrogen and ammonia, the addition of two polymer materials plants to the Repsol industrial complex, the development of a large-scale international data center and the expansion of Sines anchored transatlantic fiber optical cable network.
These are exciting times for Sines. We invite you to take part in it by contacting us at:
